There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK and this is set to increase to over one million by 2025 and over two million by 2050. Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Many people will also experience issues with sight and perception.

Unique design challenges

These symptoms of dementia present a unique set of challenges when it comes to the design of care environments and hospitals. Special consideration must be given to hygiene, safety, colour and contrast, and to include clear signage to support people to live more easily and maximise their quality of life.

Colour and contrast

This is an important element in designing for dementia and older people. Colour can help to identify key features and rooms which can facilitate independent living. Our projects at Hitchin Health Centre and The Essex Lodge Surgery are great examples of using colour and contrast in design to benefit patients.

Also using a colour that contrasts with the background will naturally draw attention to key features. For example, it can be easier to locate doors, washrooms and use handrails, that are of contrasting colour to the wall. Colour and contrast can be also used to highlight hazards. For example, highlighting sharp edges and corners with colour draws attention to the danger that they may pose.
